1군의 기회가 없음에도 왜 벤 우드번의 성장은 늦춰지지 않는가
리버풀은 벤 우드번이 이번 1군이 될 것이라는 전망에 실패했음에도 불구, 그 웨일즈 선수의 발전을 확신하고 있다.

크리스 콜먼이 우드번을 선더랜드로 데려오기 위한 관심 표명에도, 리버풀은 1월 이적 시장에서 이적을 막기로 결심했다.
리버풀과 웨을즈로 여행을 갔음에도, 우드번은 지난주 토요일 아스날과의 유스컵에서 선발 출전할 것으로 보였으나 출전하지 못했고, 하루 뒤 찰튼과의 U23 경기와 월요일 스완지 경기에서 최종 18인 명단에 들지 못했다.
지난 시즌에는 4번 선발 출전했고 5번 벤치멤버 였던것과 비교해봤을 때, 이번 시즌 그의 축구는 닐 크리츨리(웨일즈-U23 감독)나 U19 유에파 유스컵 팀과 함께였다.
그 계획이 우드번에게 1군 출전의 기회를 더 얻게 해줄 수 있냐고 물었다.
크리츨리는 “저는 벤이 분명히 같은 생각일거라고 믿습니다. 그는 마르코 그루이치나 다른 몇몇이 나가는 것을 볼 것입니다”
“그는 번리와의 경기에서 벤치에 있었습니다. 그래서 그는 1군 스쿼드에 들 수 있다고 생각할겁니다. 만약 그가 플레이를 하고 그것이 훌륭했다면, 그는 여전히 어리고 발전을 위해 더 경기를 뛸 필요가 있습니다.”

“그의 진전에 있어, 매순간 저는 그가 한 단계 더올라갔다고 생각합니다.”
“그를 보고 그가 속한 환경에서 혜택을 받았다고 생각합니다. 그가 저희를 위해 플레이할 때 모두 그렇게 말할 수 있습니다”
“하지만 언젠가 그가 성인 축구를 할 기회가 있을 겁니다. - 그리고 이번 이적 시장에서 안 좋은 이야기들이 퍼졌습니다. - 다음 주에 무슨 일이 있을 것 같습니다. 이에 대해서는 잘 모르겠습니다.”

또 다른 리버풀의 유망주 라이언 켄트는 최근에 분데스리가의 프라이부르크 임대에서 돌아와 현재는 챔피언쉽의 브리스톨 시티에서 승격을 위해 노력중입니다”
독일에서의 경험이 실망으로 보이시나요?
“우리는 이걸 실망으로 보지 않고, 발전의 한 단계라고 봅니다. 단지 프리미어리그에서 뛰는 몇몇 선수들을 봐야합니다. - 현재는 영국을 위해 뛰는 – 그들이 가진 많은 임대에서.

Why Ben Woodburn's Liverpool development has not stalled despite lack of first-team opportunities
Liverpool remain convinced of the development of Ben Woodburn despite the Welsh prospect failing to break through to the first team this season.
The 18-year-old has made just one substitute appearance for the first team this term - in the Carabao Cup defeat at Leicester in September - despite impressing with Wales during the World Cup qualifiers.
The club are understood to have decided against a loan move in the January window, despite interest from his former international manager Chris Coleman in taking him to Sunderland.
Woodburn had been seen as a possible starter in last Saturday's Youth Cup tie at Anfield against Arsenal but didn't play, was missing from the U23 team against Charlton a day later and didn't make the final 18 for the first team at Swansea on the Monday, although he did travel to Wales with Jurgen Klopp's team.
His Liverpool football this season has been with Neil Critchley's U23s or with the U19 UEFA Youth Cup team compared to last season when he enjoyed four first team starts and five appearances from the bench.
Asked if the plan was to get Woodburn more first team action, Critchley said: "Definitely - and I'm sure Ben will be thinking the same. He'll see the likes of Marko Grujic going out (on loan) and possibly one or two others.
"He was on the bench the other day (New Year's Day at Burnley) so he'll be thinking he's got a chance in and around the first team squad. If it means he plays some games for us then great, he's still young and needs to play games to develop.
"If that's with us, brilliant, but ultimately what he wants and what we want is the same which is to play games for our first team.
"He'll have the UEFA Youth League as well which will kick off again in February, so he will have games and hopefully that will be with the first team rather than us."
Critchley said that the player - who has generally been in midfield rather than further forward this year - would be well aware of the situation.
"I'm sure the manager (Klopp) has spoken to him to explain what his plan is, the manager is good with the younger players and speaks to them a lot.
"So I'm sure Ben is aware of the situation. Like Rhian (Brewster), he's a down to earth humble person and I'm sure he's not worried about the situation.
"He's training at Melwood every single day with world-class players so that's not bad for a boy's development at 18.“
That development is why Critchley rejects any suggestion that this has been a wasted year for Woodburn, after he became the club's youngest ever goalscorer against Leeds in the autumn of 2016.
"I don't see him every day so it's difficult to quantify what he's learning but when he plays for us he's performed very well and in the UEFA Youth League as well.
"In terms of his progression, every time I've seen him I've thought 'you've gone on a level'.
"I see him and think he's benefiting from the environment he's in. I think everyone would say that when he's played for us.
"But at some point there will be a time - and it's been bandied around in this transfer window - that he will go and play senior football somewhere. That might happen in the next week, I'm in the dark a little on that.
"But if it doesn't he'll have between now and the end of the season to try and get in and around the first team squad. And if he doesn't I'm sure we'll review it again in pre-season next year.“
Another talented Liverpool youngster, Ryan Kent, recently returned from a loan spell at Freiburg in the Bundesliga and is now trying his luck at promotion-chasing Bristol City in the Championship.
Was the experiment in Germany seen as a disappointment?
"We don't see it as disappointments, we just see it as another layer of development," Critchley said. "You just have to look at some of the players playing in the Premier League - and for England now - at the amount of loans they had.
"It's 'what classes as a successful loan or not?' So when Ryan went to Freiburg, they changed the system. They had played with wingers - he's a winger - but they went three at the back and he was playing as a number 10. It didn't really suit him and he's got a chance to go to Bristol. He came on the other night against Man City and I thought he did well.
"He's got to build up some momentum again. He's not played for a bit so he's got to prove himself again.
"That's being a young footballer, you've got to have psychological stamina to last. That's one thing Ryan has, he's very determined. I'm expecting him to have an impact at Bristol in the second half of the season.“
